The UK is facing a growing and evolving set of threats and risks that are becoming more unprecedented in their scale and level of disruption. The last five years alone have seen a once in a generation pandemic event, the return of war in Europe, dozens of extreme weather events and multiple cyber-attacks, all of which have had wide-ranging impacts on communities and public services around the country.
The National Risk Register 2023 outlined in detail 89 significant vulnerabilities, highlighting the evolving and complex nature of key threats and risks facing the UK. However, as illustrated by the recent CrowdStrike outage, it is vital to prepare for new unforeseen and unexpected incidents that can also produce wide-ranging disruptions, especially in an increasingly interconnected digital world. This and other recent events have highlighted the critical role of robust prevention frameworks, resilience strategies and coordination between agencies in anticipating, preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergency incidents.
In the wake of the publication of Module 1 of the Covid Inquiry: Resilience and Preparedness and the London Climate Resilience Review, this Policy Foresight online live conference offers a timely opportunity for local resilience forums, statutory agencies and strategic partners to examine the key themes and recommendations of these and other recent reviews and inquiries. Participants will explore how the new Government is preparing for and responding to ever-changing threats as well as discussing how to embed a 'whole-system’ and ‘whole of society’ approach to strengthen local and national resilience structures. This online conference provides an ideal platform to learn from innovative best practice and share ideas with fellow participants on how to identify gaps in existing measures, embed innovative multi-agency working, improve communication and information sharing and work to deliver more effective responses to the increasingly complex emergencies that we will face in the future.
